PREGNANCY LOSS IN FLUORIDE-IMPACTED REGIONS OF INDIA: A COMPREHENSIVE STUDY ON NATURE-BASED SOLUTIONS

Geogenic fluoride contamination in drinking water is a global health issue affecting over 200 million people worldwide, particularly in Africa, Asia, and Europe. In India, fluoride contamination exceeds the WHO limit in 200 districts across 19 states, impacting over 25 million individuals. Elevated fluoride levels have been associated with reduced fertility and increased pregnancy loss rates. India's pregnancy loss rates rose from 9.8% to 11.1% between 2015 and 2021, underscoring the urgency of addressing this issue. This study investigates pregnancy loss prevalence in 19 severely affected Indian states from 2015 to 2021 using National Family Health Survey data and secondary literature. It also assesses the impact of access to fluoride-safe drinking water on pregnancy outcomes in selected areas of the fluoride-affected Dhar district in Madhya Pradesh, India. The research indicates higher pregnancy loss rates in heavily affected states but shows a significant 58% reduction in pregnancy losses in areas with fluoride-safe water access. These findings emphasize the need for comprehensive studies on fluoride's impact on pregnancy outcomes, both in India and globally. Ensuring access to fluoride-safe drinking water is crucial for preventive measures.
